KITH
Though this site's purpose has wandered over the years, it's always nice when something happens to bring me back to my roots, namely keeping up with what the former Kids in the Hall are doing these days. Help can be found in this week's Onion AV Club, where you will find an interview with Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald. This is the first part of the interview with the Kids, with Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Bruce McColloch to appear next week. Posted by Ryan Olson at 03:15 PM

Sleep Paralysis
I used to experience sleep paralysis fairly often, though it hasn't happened in a while. I remember finding these folks doing research on SP when I still lived in Arkansas, and I later had a couple episodes after which I filled out their survey. I had always kind of meant to check back and see if they've published anything. Well, they have, unfortunately mostly in journals not available online. So it looks like it's time to do some good old fashioned research. So what do you think, would I be able to find The Journal of Consciousness Studies, Cognitive Development, and The Journal of Sleep Research at you basic run of the mill city library, or am I going to have to go to a real university to find these. More importantly, why aren't the contents of these journals available online? Posted by Ryan Olson at 03:00 PM

TAB
Also, on Saturday I went to a nice local meat market to get some proper chicken for cooking on Sunday. It turns out they carry Tab, so I almost bought them out. I also made sure to make a posting on the Tab Sightings Message Board. Did you know that Tab is the tenth most caffeinated soft drink? Cool, refreshing Tab. Is there anything better? Wakarusa Recap
I went to the Wakarusa Festival last weekend. It was fun and worth the money, which was significantly less than Bonnaroo would have been. I made it out Friday morning and got there in time for Drums & Tuba. I've seen them several times before, and they were good as usual. After their show, I wandered for a while checking out all the vending going on in the campsites, but made it back in time for Sound Tribe Sector 9. They were one of only two or three bands from this weekend that I hadn't seen before and was impressed by. They play a very downtempo technoish sort of music. I'd definitely go see them again if I get the chance. The headliners for Friday night were Galactic and Robert Randolph & The Family Band. Both were more than excellent, though I didn't make all of Robert Randolph's set due to severe sunburn. (When am I going to learn that clouds do not mean that you will not burn?) Saturday morning, I had to head home to get some work done around the house, and I ended up taking a nap until late in the day. I made it back out to the festival by 7:00, got my tent set back up and made it down in time to catch most of Particle. High energy, but they're kind of repetitive, and I think I've gotten tired of them. The Derek Trucks Band was the other band I hadn't heard of that really blew me away. I am definitely going to watch for them coming to town again. They were good enough that I could even overlook the unfortunate occasional presence of a flute in the band. I had seen the last couple songs of O.A.R.'s set at Bonnaroo last year, and they seemed kind of fun. I was looking forward to their show Saturday night, but when they went on I could only make it through two or three songs. They seem like good guys, but they suffer from what I think is a major downfall of many jam-bands, namely bad lyrics, badly sung. Give me Particle, Galactic, STS9 and Derek Trucks... Vocals used sparingly, if at all. I went back to the campsite during O.A.R.'s set and caught a little bit of some of the locals. Tabla Rasa was on, and I wasn't terribly impressed. I wandered for a bit, then made it back in time for the end of Leftover Salmon just before Galactic started their late night set. Did I mention that Galactic kicks a whole lot of ass? If those guys can't get you dancing, there is something fundamentally wrong with you. You probably do not have a soul. Caught them, then made it back to the campsite where I chatted with some folks camped a few cars down from me until about 5:00 AM. I then tried to go to sleep, but my tent-neighbors were having noisy sex. That's always fun. At 9:00 it started raining, so I quickly tore down my tent and headed home. All in all, a good weekend. My biggest regret is having missed the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Sunday, but already had Sunday plans. As far as attendance, I'm never good at gauging numbers, but I heard people saying that they sold 15,000 tickets. Hopefully they'll hold this again next year. They did manage to put together quite a lineup, and I had a good time without having to drive more than 30 miles from home. Thanks a bunch, promoters. Lose the wacky morning DJ announcing the bands next year, though. That guy really needed to take it down about six or seven notches. Posted by Ryan Olson at 08:38 AM

The Final Countdown
Hockey's over, and now the NBA is done. Now we get Top 50 Lists, offseason overviews, and yesterday marked exactly two months until the first Green Bay preseason game. The long, slow offseason is definitely winding down, my friends. Yahoo! isn't taking signups yet, but who's running the league this year, and who's in? Posted by Ryan Olson at 08:47 AM

Question for the Readership
Do Mountain Dew's new Spy vs. Spy ads absolve them in any way from their previous advertising sins? Personally, I think they do. A bit. Posted by Ryan Olson at 12:55 PM

You Bastards
Thanks a lot comment spammers. You have finally forced me to go back in my archives and close comments on an old post. I just got sick of having to delete one or two spam comments on the post every day. Fuck you. Fuck you in the face. Posted by Ryan Olson at 01:21 PM

Fayetteville R.I.P.
When I first moved to Kansas City from Fayetteville, I spent a lot of time on the road between KC and northwest Arkansas. Chester's still had good music coming through, and Fayetteville remained a good place to visit. I even entertained notions of someday moving back. Then they took Chester's from us. Then they banned smoking. The smoking ban led to the closings of the Brew Pub and Jerry's. I was in town with some friends the weekend before last, and we thought it looked suspiciously dark in there... Yup. The smoking ban got Casa Taco too. I now have no reason to ever go to Fayetteville again. Thanks for wrecking what used to be a perfectly nice part of the country, folks. Posted by Ryan Olson at 07:34 AM
