Spring 2006 Update

Well, things have been changing over here in Kansas Land. The House Formerly Known as Fort Awesome continues to annoy. After last summer's flood of the computer room, we had a home inspector out to give us an idea of what we need to do to get the house back in shape. Quite a bit, it turns out. Step one was gutters, which we took care of. Next is mudjacking of the driveway and slab in back so that water is no longer directed towards the foundation. Once that is done, the foundation needs to be resealed. Then I can finally rebuild the deck and figure out what we're doing for flooring in the former computer room. At that point, the house will be ready to sell, and we will get the living hell out.

All these things cost money, of course, and to that end tomorrow I am returning to the Large Kansas Based Telecommunications Company. I'm tempted to make a "every time I try to get out, they keep pulling me back in!" joke, but I think I'd rather go with "they made me an offer I can't refuse." Contractor rates are nice, and hopefully that will help us get the house fixed up once and for all.

The dog keeps getting cuter, and is on better and better behavior every day. It's almost like we're good dog parents. I can't wait until we can move and get him a proper back yard he can run in. I'm sure he'll like it too.

The Gimpysoft domain expired last week, and I didn't even notice it was down until about four days later. Just not as much time for blogging these days, and not as much of interest to others going on in my life. Through Bex, I'm meeting a lot of interesting folks these days. Her whole knitting group is a lot of fun to hang out with, and Matt and Kelly Sue are always fun to hang out with. I'm really looking forward to Matt's upcoming book The Five Fists of Science, and I think they may have actually convinced Bex that playing video games can be fun. Now I just need to get a PS2 and Katamari Damancy.

My sister gets married at the beginning of June. We're flying out to Boston, driving south a bit and either taking a ferry or a plane to Nantucket for the wedding. I'm not sure what we'll do once we're there, but I'm sure it will be a good time.

I'm still playing Bridge, though don't seem to be improving much. I need to play more, and need more partners to play with. (Yes, you too can learn to play bridge.) The Kansas City Bridge Studio website has been up and running for a while now, and it looks like the directors are regularly posting scores now, which is pretty cool. It looks like traffic at the site is going up as people realize that there is useful information on there. I have an endless list of enhancements I'd like to make, but like anything, it's a matter of time that I just don't seem to have.

No Arrested Development, it looks like. The Sopranos has been all right so far this season, but I'm not blown away. I lied about giving Big Love through three episodes to hold my interest. When the third episode of Sopranos ended, we were too tired to stay up and see Bill Paxton's ass another six times. I'm still looking forward to Deadwood this summer and The Wire in the fall. The last two seasons of both of those shows helped them pole-vault past Sopranos as my most anticipated shows on TV. Both are highly recommended for you Netflixers out there.

As for music, Bex and I are both extremely torn up that this year's Bonnaroo is so close to my sister's wedding. This year's lineup is so good that we'd both be there if not for a trip to Nantucket in early June. Radiohead, Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, Bela Fleck, Ben Folds, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Sonic Youth, My Morning Jacket, Cat Power, Medeski Martin & Wood, Atmosphere, and The Streets just to name a few. This year's is definitly worth the trip. Unfortunately, I'm going to settle once again for Wakarusa, and more than likely only a day of that. The Flaming Lips will be there, along with Cracker, Andrew Bird and Sound Tribe Sector 9. Hopefully they're all on the same day, but my guess is I won't be that lucky.

Other than that, not a whole lot going on here. How 'bout you guys. Anything interesting going on out in internet-land?
